BMW Orders Recall of 28,582 Cars Worldwide
The issue centers on potential excessive wear in the starter motor solenoid after prolonged use. According to the automaker, this degradation could make starting the vehicle difficult — or impossible — and in certain cases may lead to a short circuit that causes localized overheating within the starter motor.
In extreme cases, the overheating could ignite a fire while the vehicle is being driven.
As a precaution, BMW is urging owners of vehicles manufactured during the affected production window not to leave their cars unattended with the engine running.
The recall applies to multiple models, including variants of the 2 Series Coupe as well as the 3, 4, 5 and 7 Series sedans. Also covered are the 6 Series Gran Turismo and the X4, X5, X6 and Z4 models.
Vehicles equipped with starter relays manufactured between July 2020 and July 2022 face heightened risk. The recall also includes cars fitted with defective starter motors during previous repair work.
The latest move follows a separate large-scale recall announced in September, covering vehicles built between September 2015 and 2021 due to a starter system fault that could also result in a vehicle fire.
While that earlier recall was tied to corrosion caused by water intrusion, the current defect stems from mechanical wear. Notably, the previous fire risk could occur even when the engine was switched off, whereas the newly identified hazard is considered more likely to arise while the engine is running.
